Beyond certification, commercial grade in practice means frame joinery that uses mortise-and-tenon or dowel construction rather than staples and glue, foam density specified above 30kg/m³ for seat cushions, and fabric with a Martindale abrasion rating of at least 30,000 rubs. When evaluating a supplier's commercial grade claim, asking for test reports is a reasonable and standard request.

Martindale abrasion testing is the standard method for measuring fabric durability in the furniture industry, and the numbers are worth understanding. Below 10,000 rubs is considered light domestic use — suitable for occasional chairs that don't see daily intensive use. 15,000–25,000 covers standard residential applications. 30,000 and above is the threshold for commercial contract use. For hospitality buyers, 40,000+ is worth specifying. Beyond Martindale, pilling resistance and colorfastness to light are the other ratings that matter for day-to-day performance — particularly for bouclé and velvet fabrics, which can look worn quickly if the yarn quality is poor. When requesting fabric specifications from a supplier, asking for Martindale rating, pilling grade, and colorfastness rating together gives a complete picture of how the material will perform in use.
